What’s a Holiday in Madeira Like?

If you like rugged coastlines and steep rocky peaks, consider a holiday in Madeira

There is so much to do when on holiday in Madeira. And it’s so easy to get around because the infrastructure on the island is exceptional, with tarmac roads and an impressive tunnel network. For this reason, we usually recommend getting a hire car, though there is also a good public transport service covering the whole island.

Funchal, the capital city

Funchal is the capital city and sits on the more temperate south coast of the island. It’s an ideal place for those looking for a fun and sunny city break, because there is so much to do in this charming city. You can take a cable car ride for a fantastic view across the city, ride in the famous toboggans, visit the bontanical gardens, take a tuk tuk tour, or go on a food and wine tour. There are literally endless sites and excursions to keep you entertained.

Active North East Madeira

Northeast of the island is the best region if you want to explore the island of Madeira on foot. From levada walks to steep rocky ridge trails, and pleasant coastal ambles, there’s something for everyone (though is particularly ideal for those who like challenging mountain walks).

The North East end of the island is also the best place to stay if you want to enjoy a range of activities. You can go mountain biking (it’s steep!), coasteering and canyoning, kayaking and snorkelling.  There are numerous interesting small towns and villages that are definitely worth a visit along the way.

Quiet South West Madeira

On the other hand if you’re looking for something less “active” the Southwest of this island is well-known for its pretty fishing villages and never ending sunsets. It would be so easy to lose a day with your feet up, eating some of the best fresh fish on the whole island, sipping on a cold glass of Poncha (a cocktail of local rum, honey and lemon).

There are some quieter trails at this end of the island, and some incredible tidal-fed pools. If you fancy a sandy beach, Calheta has a man-made beach, with sand shipped in from the Sahara! You can also drive to one of the best swimming spots on the Island, at Porto Moniz. It’s just a 40 minute scenic drive.

Madeira’s Weather

Maderia gets hot in the midst of Summer, with temperatures ranging around the 24C and 25C mark during the day. This means you can enjoy a holiday during July and August without the intense heat of places such like Greece and Spain. For cooler temperatures, Spring and Autumn are nice periods and there are fewer crowds. A hotel with a pool is always helpful if you need to cool off.
