Centred around the Rua Santa Maria, one of the island’s oldest streets, the old town’s colourfully painted doors and rehabilitated historic buildings come alive in the evenings, as locals and visitors enjoy an exhilarating mix of street-art, street-entertainment and superb Madeiran cuisine.
You’ll have time to explore the capital on foot – time to wander around her coffee shops and café bars, her marinas and museums, and her botanical gardens and historic buildings. You’ll also venture further afield with our guides: into the high central mountains to the famous Curral das Freiras Nuns Valley, and across the island to Porto Moniz – to explore the striking coastal landscapes of the remote northwest.
