The Details
You’ll begin your holiday on the sunny south coast of the island, in the old fishing town of Camara de Lobos. This is Funchal’s commuter belt, where you’ll mix with good-humoured locals, surrounded by the hurly-burly of everyday island life. The landscape here is dominated by steep volcanic ridges, where traditional whitewashed houses, tangled vineyards and dense banana plantations cling precipitously to Camara’s man-made escarpments.
Crossing to the north, you’ll see a very different side to Madeira. This sparsely populated coast is less-frequented by visitors to the island, and there’s a pleasant, old-world feel to the north which is reflected in it’s rural architecture, it’s diminutive seafront villages, and the time-honoured Madeiran cuisine served in it’s local restaurants. The landscape is arguably more striking than in the south, as the unrestrained tides of the Atlantic clash with the north coast’s unyielding, immovable seacliffs.
