Casa Sierra Maestra : Sierra Maestra Mountains
The Casa Sierra Maestra is a fantastic example of the development of private enterprise in Cuba, which is a very challenging but possible endeavour. To achieve this success deep in the Sierra Maestra mountains is a testament to the devotion of the owners to enhance the experience of this beautiful and unique mountain location for visitors who come to enjoy the mountains.
The small and simple timber lodge farmhouse, located on the banks of the River Yara, has been lovingly transformed into a 6 bedroomed rural Casa. It is a very homely place where the original farmstead remains, with additional modern rooms added on.
The small wooden terrace overlooking the river is “base camp” for the Casa, where guests can relax enjoy drinks throughout the day and where all the meals are served. Expect simple home cooked ” Campesino” style authentic Cuban dishes, cooked and served by the owners.
With Pico Turquino, Cuba’s highest peak visible in the distance, the Casa can be reached by crossing a small bridge over the river connecting the Casa with the hamlet. From here Cuba’s steepest road takes you up to the start of the walks to La Plata and the trek to the top of Turquino. For those less active, paths lead along the picturesque River Yara with some stunning views of the mountains, great birdwatching and the chance for cooling dips in the natural pools.
The bedrooms are naturally very simple, although comfortable and have small private bathrooms and air conditioning units. For any assistance the very friendly team born and bred in the mountains are on hand to support you during your stay and some do have enough English for conversation.
