Why Max loves Ireland

Ireland gets under your skin – there’s a rich depth and warmth that’s all Ireland’s own.

The west coast is where the Atlantic Ocean and mountains meet.  The cliff scenery and beaches, culture and activities rival any of our destinations for beauty and character  and of course, there is the great Irish craic!

I head to Ireland to unwind and relax in the space and slow pace that the west coast allows. My personal definition of relaxing in Ireland is pretty broad and it varies from climbing mountains to rise above the everyday and getting lost in the sensations of a long bike ride.

On other days I love walking on beaches to find hidden coves and at the end of the day eat a good meal in a characterful restaurant. Or just sit in a bar supping a good pint. (I know you want me to say ‘of Guinness’ but there’s also a good variety of local craft beer to be found in Ireland.)

I have found there’s a strong sense of belonging in the towns and villages, where the locals are open and happy to talk to friends and strangers alike. The Irish pub is an excellent place to meet and learn from locals about them and their life both now and in the past.

Exploring towns still chock full of independent shops and businesses, is an echo of the England of my childhood; then you stop near the coast to enjoy the sunset.

For me County Mayo is the place to head for as it’s away from the main tourist routes yet has everything that’s good about Ireland.

Ballina and Westport are small towns with big hearts. There’s salmon fishing on the River Moy and water sports on the coast. The coast line has the largest cliffs in Ireland at Croaghaun on Achill Island – 688m from summit to sea.

As well as mountainous peaks, Achill Island also has beaches rivalling anywhere, with crystal clear waters for snorkelling and swimming.

Speaking of islands, did I mention you can island hop here? Combine Achil Island with Clare Island and tiny Inshturk Island. In County Mayo you can sleep in a lighthouse on an island, in a castle surrounded by forest, and in a former ice house whose walls are lapped by a river estuary.
