Three unique experiences in Cape Verde

A group of ten islands that sit in the Atlantic ocean about 350 miles off the western coast of Africa, Cape Verde is a perfect destination for active travellers keen to explore what lies beyond the pristine beaches for which the country is well known.

Here are some unique experiences to whet your appetite, and you’ll find more in our Cape Verde Holidays

Gaze at the Milky Way whilst staying in a volcanic crater on Fogo

Staying in the volcanic crater on Fogo is an amazing experience and at night, due to the lack of any light pollution, the skies come alive and you feel like you can reach out and touch the Milky Way!

The last major eruption on Fogo occurred in 2014 and the villages in the crater were all but destroyed.  Since then a lot of work has gone into slowly rebuilding the community, but the lava flows have left their mark as the BBC’s Ade Adepitan found out during his recent visit:

Why I live under an active volcano

Walking with the kingfishers on Santiago

Exploring the dramatic scenery of Santiago on foot is in itself a fantastic experience, made even more unique by the abundance of kingfishers that seem to be watching your every move!

Stay in a ‘recycled’ hotel on Sao Vicente

It is safe to say Terra Lodge is not your usual, run-of-the-mill hotel. Built using reclaimed timber and recycled metal cans, and powered by its own solar panels, this is truly a unique place to stay – and looking out across Mindelo whilst relaxing in a hammock is a lovely way to end a day of exploring!
