Things to see and do in Madeira

There are many things to see and do in Madeira and your biggest worry is to decide how you are going to do it all. Now, you will have to agree that this is a very nice problem to have. Whether you choose to walk, drive or cycle your way around this beautiful island you will come across breathtaking landscapes of steep mountain ridges and sea cliffs, with spectacular views out over the Atlantic.

Walking tours

The dramatic coastal paths can have their challenges as they can often be steep with no shade or quite windy. However, you will be rewarded with the most amazing scenery and you’ll want to stop several times to take pictures.

Mountain biking

The island has a bit of everything for mountain biking – XC trails that mix Madeira’s famous Levada’s with spectacular coastline singletrack. Flowy, woodland descents crisscrossing full-on downhill tracks and gap jumps; perfect for a day of uplifts. And our favourite: steep, technical zig-zagging footpaths that hug the cliffs on the North Coast – like some of the best trails we have here in the Lakes, only dry and warm.

Whale and dolphin watching

Madeira’s position in the North Atlantic makes it the ideal destination for Whale and Dolphin watching. Add in the island’s temperate Winter weather, and you’ve arguably got the best year-round destination for Cetaceans (and for humans to spot them).

Guided jeep tours

Many of our guided Jeep Tours also head off-road, where you’ll see the protected Laurel forests which are indigenous to the island. Much of the island’s wild interior is classified as a protected Natural Park – the aim is to conserve what remains of the Laurel Forests which were once common across mainland Europe.
