Shark swimming dilemma

Operators in the Azores are starting to promote shark swimming as an activity. It’s great for headlines and creating a buzz about the Azores so naturally many people are in favour of it.

Shark Swimming Azores

One of our whale watching operators, however, has expressed concerns about the activity :

  • it is currently unregulated (unlike whale watching and swimming with dolphins)
  • clients are possibly more interested in adrenalin than the protection of the sharks
  • operators are feeding the sharks to attract them which changes their normal behaviour
  • local fishermen say they are beginning to see more sharks and are concerned they will associate boats with food

As a company, we have chosen not to promote shark swimming activities until we know more about how it operates.
