It’s easy to get distracted by the beauty of the scenery whilst you’re on our Sao Tome holidays, but its marine world is just as impressive.
With sea temperatures around 27 degrees and a wealth of species due to the equatorial currents, my family spent days snorkelling from white sand beaches and off wooden fishing boats. The children’s practice sessions in the bath(!) at home really paid off with sightings of parrot fish, butterfly fish, angel fish, clown fish, small sharks and colourful corals.
Highlights for us included the boat trip from Club Santana to Santana Islet where we snorkelled around the basalt cliffs – if we had been diving we could have entered the 6m wide channel which cuts through the island to the other side.
From Rolas Island off the SE tip of Sao Tome, all the beautiful sandy beaches provided safe and shallow snorkelling and sightings of leatherback turtle tracks and we were usually the only people there.
Then on to Principe, where we just had to walk 20 paces from our chalet at Bom Bom resort, to the 2 wonderful snorkelling beaches; we found depending on the wind direction that day, one was always sheltered and the sea calm. No trip to Principe is complete without a trip to Banana beach and we hired a boat and driver from reception and set off. It is a stunning white sand beach immortalised in the 1970’s Bacardi rum advert and finished off our holiday on a high.
