Walk Around the Government Buildings on Tinganes, Tórshavn
Tinganes, which means “parliament point,” is a fitting name for these historic government buildings perched on a rocky isthmus jutting into the port of Tórshavn. This site is one of the oldest known parliamentary meeting places in the world, established by Norwegian colonists during Viking times. Today, visitors can stroll past the grass-roofed buildings and enjoy sweeping views of the harbour.
The final building on the point houses the Prime Minister’s office, and just beyond it, keen eyes can spot a Viking compass rose and runes carved into the rock. During Ólavsøka, the Saint Olav’s Day celebrations on 28 and 29 July, Tinganes is the perfect spot to watch the final rowing races of the season, Faroese national sport, and enjoy the singing and festivities that fill the streets.
