Faroese Cultural Tours

As well as the more specific food and brewery/distillery tours on off in throughout the Faroe Islands, you can also enjoy a variety of tours that will introduce you to the history and culture of the many islands that make up this fascinating archipelago.

Vestmanna Guided Tour

Whilst the sea cliffs of Vestmanna are rightly regarded as one of the main attractions in the Faroe Islands, it’s well worth taking a day here to have a guided tour. The day usually starts with a visit to the Saga Museum where the history of the Faroe Islands is depicted in 13 scene with wax models (the stories are quite brutal and graphic some maybe not suitable for youngsters). Afterwards, you’ll be lead through the town being told stories of it’s development, before finishing at your guides house where you’ll be served traditional dishes and regaled with more stories, and, if you’re lucky, a performance on the piano.

Klaksvík Audio Tours

Enjoy a walk around the second largest town in the Faroe Islands at your own pace. You have the choice of a shorter walk (1.5 km) that will still give you a good understanding of the history of the town, or a longer walk (6 km) that focuses on the Klaksvík Rebellion in the 1950s that started when the authorities tried to force the only doctor in the Northern Islands to leave. This grassroots movement escalated into civil unrest, causing clashes among locals, armed police, and the military. The rebellion underscored the tension between Danish rule and a push for Faroese Independence.

Saksun Heritage Farm – Dúvugarðar.

The Dúvugarðar Heritage Farm is part of the largest farm in the Faroe Islands, which supports a flock of about 700 sheep on 2.500 hectares. The farm is run by a modern farming family that works and lives in Saksun all year round.

In 2024 the family started the ongoing project to restore the old farm buildings that make up Dúvugarðar to give visitors the chance to see how life was for those who lived and worked on the farm in the 18th century.

A visit to Dúvugarðar Heritage Farm can be combined with a walk over the old path that links the villages of Saksun and Tjørnuvik.

Best time to go

Despite their northerly location, the Faroes enjoy surprisingly mild temperatures thanks to the tail end of the Gulf Stream which tempers the chill. Strong winds and frequent rainfall are part of daily life, which summer highs usually around 15°C. If you want to escape the heat of summer, then the Faroe Islands is a great option!

Arrive expecting a mix of cloud and rain along with days of sunshine and endless views. Most visitors choose to come between May and August, the driest and warmest months, with July and August being peak season. In summer, the islands’ northern latitude means long days and near-twilight nights, when mountain silhouettes linger against the sky. Between May and August you can expect 16 to 20 hours of daylight.
