A couple of years ago, the splendid plantation estate, Roça Sundy, reopened its doors to guests on the island of Príncipe and each year that passes they improve the facilities available to guests.
You’ll sense the history of the Roça as soon as you arrive as at the start of the 20th century, Sundy was at the heart of one of the largest cacao plantations on the islands of Sao Tome and Principe. Now, lovers of nature, sustainability and escape are invited to stay in one of the 12 comfortable en-suite rooms.
Restoring the Roça has been a labour of love, driven by a passion for sustainability, and all the work has been carried out by local builders, especially trained for the job and mainly using recycled materials.
The rooms have been furnished with traditional colonial pieces, many from the original house, and several have spacious balconies overlooking the lush rainforest, or square.
The restaurant, with its restored veranda, has incredible views to the Atlantic Ocean and you’ll enjoy a menu created from locally sourced, organic produce grown within the property’s own plantation garden or fairly negotiated with local producers.
Roça Sundy, a sister of Bom Bom Island Eco Lodge and Omali Lodge, is the ideal base from which to join our forest walks through the Obo National Park – a UNESCO biosphere reserve, visit the empty yellow sandy beaches where you can snorkel and kayak; and join our jeep tours, whale watching excursions (July – October) and turtle watching trips (November to April).
