Guided walks on Príncipe

Príncipe, the smaller of São Tomé and Príncipe’s two inhabited islands, has a much smaller resident population and a wonderfully secluded atmosphere. Life moves at a slower pace here, creating a sense of exclusivity that feels far removed from the outside world. Visitors can stay in intimate luxury lodges nestled within the rainforest, many with access to private beaches, or in beautifully restored plantation manor houses that blend historic charm with modern comforts. We especially love Bom Bom Eco Lodge and Roça Sundy, where the location and warm welcome are a highlight in its own right.

The walking trails on Príncipe feel similarly special. The entirety of the island and the surrounding islets is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the beautiful Obô Natural Park, spans a portion of both islands, covers about one quarter of Príncipe. Along your walks, you can spot tropical birds in the tree canopies because these islands have the highest concentration of endemic birds, relative to their land mass, of anywhere in the world!

The cacao and coffee plantations, known as Roça’s, are the footprint left behind by the early Portuguese settlers. Most of these historic plantation estates can be found on São Tomé, but there are a few to be found across smaller Príncipe, with Roça Sundy being the largest chocolate plantation on the island. It also gained significant notoriety during the 1919 solar eclipse, when Sir Arthur Eddington, a famous British astronomer, was able to prove Einstein’s theory of relativity when he was able to observe light bending around the sun. So the age of discovery and, much later, an astronomical discovery.

There are plenty of short walks and strolls that can be enjoyed directly from your lodge or Roça. For walks that venture further into the island’s interior, however, we always arrange for a local guide to accompany you. Their presence adds greatly to the experience, providing fascinating insights into life on the island as well as sharing their knowledge of the unique flora and fauna you will encounter along the way. To give you a sense of what is available, we have highlighted a selection of our favourite walks below.

Lost City Trail to Ribeira Izé – Half-day (3 hours)Guided walks in São Tome and Principe

If you’re looking for a true lost world experience, this is Príncipe’s iconic walk. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll set out from beautiful Sundy Beach and follow a trail along the coast before heading into the heart of the rainforest. The route leads to the ruins of Ribeira Izé, in the former capital of Príncipe and once the site of one of the island’s most important sugar and coffee plantations. Founded in the 16th century, the now decaying city of Ribeira Izé played a key role in the island’s early colonial history before being abandoned in the 19th century as agriculture declined and investment faded away.

Today, the forest is steadily reclaiming what remains of the settlement, conjuring up images of other lost cities like Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu. As you explore the site, you’ll discover the ruins of the old church, the old plantation works and clusters of settlement buildings being dominated by towering trees and dense tropical vegetation, their walls draped in roots and greenery. This walk offers a glimpse into Príncipe’s past, a journey into a forgotten world.

Cacao Route – gentle walk and chocolate-tasting tour (2 hours)

Roça Sundy Cacao Plantation on Príncipe - Chocolate tasting experiences

Today you may like to join a gentle walking tour that explores one of Príncipe’s most important traditions: cacao cultivation and chocolate making. The island’s chocolate has earned an international reputation for its quality, and this immersive experience follows the journey of cacao from tree to table. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk through the historic plantations surrounding Roça Sundy, learning how cacao is grown beneath the shade of the rainforest canopy and how generations of islanders have cultivated this prized crop. Along the way, you’ll gain an insight into the planting, harvesting and fermentation processes that are essential to producing fine chocolate, as well as the important role cacao continues to play in the island’s economy and culture.

The walk continues to the drying areas, where you’ll see how the beans are carefully prepared before being transformed into chocolate. The experience concludes at Sundy’s chocolate factory, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample a selection of cacao-based products and appreciate the subtle flavours that make Príncipe’s chocolate so highly regarded. Combining history, agriculture and local gastronomy, this is a relaxed and rewarding excursion that provides a deeper understanding of one of the island’s most famous exports.

Oque Pipi Waterfall Trail – half day (4 hours)

Oquê Pipi waterfall walk on Príncipe

The Oqui Pipi Waterfall Walk is one of Príncipe’s most rewarding half-day hikes, combining rainforest scenery, island history and the chance for a refreshing swim. Beginning at Nova Estrela on the edge of Obô Natural Park, the route follows part of the old Infante trail to the waterfall, returning via the same route. The trail was once used to transport coffee and cocoa beans from the island’s plantations. In places, remnants of the original railway tracks can still be seen beside the path. After around 10–15 minutes, the walk leaves the main track and climbs steadily along a narrow forest trail, winding through dense vegetation towards the waterfall. The natural pool at the bottom of the waterfall provides the perfect spot for a cooling swim and rest. Including the one-hour transfer each way, the excursion takes about four hours. The two hour walk covers around 6km, with 211m of ascent and descent, making it a moderately challenging but highly rewarding outing.

From Roça Sundy’s Rainforest to Sundy Beach – Half day (4 hours)

Sundy Praia on Príncipe - The Principe Collection

This enjoyable guided walk offers a wonderful introduction to Príncipe’s rainforest landscapes and unspoilt coastline. Starting at historic Roça Sundy, you’ll set off with a local guide and follow a gently descending trail through lush tropical forest, learning about the island’s unique flora and fauna along the way. As the trees gradually give way to views of golden sands, you’ll emerge at a secluded stretch of coastline. There is time to relax and take a refreshing swim before continuing on foot. The coastal section of the walk skirts the shoreline towards the beautiful Sundy Beach and you can spot a variety of seabirds along the way. At the end of the walk, you will be transferred back to your accommodation.

Agroforest and Oquê Daniel Viewpoint – light walking (3 hours)

Agro Forests in Sao Tome and Principe

This gentle walk offers a fascinating insight into Príncipe’s agricultural heritage, showcasing the crops that end up on your plate at the end of each day! Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll explore small plantations and cultivated areas where products such as coffee, cocoa, vanilla and a variety of tropical fruits and spices are grown. This is an important part of the local economy, and a window into the distinctive flavours that mark the delicious cuisine of São Tomé and Príncipe.

The agricultural scenery gradually gives way to lush rainforest, taking you on to Oquê Daniel viewpoint. This is one of the most spectacular vantage points on Príncipe, with sweeping views of dense forest stretching towards the coast. Dramatic volcanic peaks rise sharply from the tropical foliage. It’s an extraordinarily beauty view point. Those who want to enjoy the viewpoint but would prefer a shorter walk can enjoy an easy guided 2km walk directly to Oquê Daniel viewpoint, which is a particularly nice option as a sunset walk.

Pico Papagaio – Parrot Mountain – challenging hiking (6 hours)

A guided walk up Parrot Mountain on Príncipe

If you are a strong and agile hiker, you might like to join a guided ascent of Pico Papagaio, one of Príncipe’s most famous mountains. Visible from the town of Santo António, this striking volcanic peak rises to approximately 700 metres and is formed from basalt rock. Surrounded by both primary and secondary rainforest, it lies within the boundaries of Obô Natural Park. This challenging trek takes you to the summit, passing through lush tropical forest where you may spot monkeys, endemic birds, orchids and traditional medicinal plants along the way. The views from the top are spectacular, with sweeping panoramas across the island’s forest-clad interior and dramatic coastline.

The trail can be demanding at times. Ascending through humid rainforest means negotiating muddy and often slippery paths, as well as stepping over exposed tree roots, so footwear with good grip is essential. For the most part, the hike is not particularly technical, with the main challenges being the steep gradients, slippery terrain and tropical conditions. However, close to the summit there is a short section of exposed rock that requires a moderate scramble before reaching the top.

Maria Correia Waterfall Trail | Hiking | Full Day (6 Hours)

Fishing towns of Sao Tome and Principe

This full-day walk takes you to the beautiful Maria Correia waterfall. The trail you follow gives you an intimate glimpse into a side of island life that few visitors get to see. You’ll pass through a small fishing village where colourful wooden boats line the shore and daily life unfolds at a typical island pace. Your guide will share insights into the island’s culture, history and wildlife, bringing the landscape to life as you walk.

You’ll follow coastal trails and forest paths, passing golden sandy beaches, passing beneath towering tropical trees opening onto quiet stretches of coastline. There are plenty of opportunities to pause along the route to enjoy the views, watch seabirds circling overhead, and appreciate the remarkable sense of tranquillity that defines Príncipe. The highlight of the day is reaching the secluded Cascata Maria Correia, a beautiful waterfall hidden amongst lush vegetation close to the coast. Here, cool freshwater tumbles into a natural pool, creating the perfect place to rest after the walk and enjoy a refreshing swim.
