Mucumbli Lodge
The genuine hospitality and pretty cliff top location of Mucumbli Lodge makes it a first choice for those looking to get lost in nature. The characterful wooden chalets are connected by a quaint network of cobbled paths, with overhanging banana trees. All have verandas overlooking the pebbled beach below, which can be reached via a stepped path in about ten minutes. In the mornings you can watch the fishermen heading out in their carved wooden boats.
Mucumbli Lodge is owned by Italian couple, Tiziano and Mari. They’ve lived on the island for many years and originally built the lodge as a place for family and friends to stay. They now run it as an eco lodge, with a restaurant serving a delicious fusion of Italian and Sao Tomean food. The rustic chalets are decorated using local materials and range from doubles and twins to three-bedroom bungalows. All have en-suite bathrooms and spacious verandas facing out to sea. Instead of air-conditioning, the rooms have ceiling fans to keep you cool. Wi-Fi is available in the restaurant.
Enjoy relaxing in the hammocks, or follow the steep path down to the long beach with its dark volcanic sand. Between November and March turtles nest on the rocky beach, and between July and October it’s possible to look for humpback whales and dolphins on whale watching trips. As well as guided walks and guided roca tours, Mucumbli is a great place to hire bikes and explore the quiet north-west coast.
