Vila Gale Collection Ponte de Lima Vineyards
Officially, the northwest province of Minho ceased to exist in 1976, and yet it remains one of the strongest regional identities in Portugal. Tradition dominates, rooted in the day-to-day of agricultural life, and the rain dictates the rhythm of life, giving the region its soft, misty mornings and fertile countryside.
Minho is also the home of the effervescent vinho verde: a young, floral wine which reflects the freshness of this landscape, and the Vila Gale Collection Ponte de Lima Vineyards occupies one of the region’s oldest vinho verde estates. The 15th century Paco do Curutelo is at its centre – designated a Property of Public Interest since 1977, this fortified manor house and its surrounding fifty-seven-hectare estate were purchased by Vila Gale in 2022; the centrepiece of their Ponte de Lima Vineyards Hotel, which opened its doors to the public in 2025.
The surrounding vineyards form part of an active winemaking project, and the estate’s relationship with wine is central to any stay. The loureiro and alvarinho grape varieties, mainstays of vinho verde, thrive here, as does Avesso and Arinto. The state-of-the-art winery represents the balance being struck between innovation and heritage – the same careful balance was foremost in the design brief for the modern, 21st century hotel which wraps itself in and around the preserved castle.
There are sixty-nine guest rooms, and their décor is understated, calm and comfortable. The Vila Gale feature wall makes its usual appearance – sculptors such as Rodin, Bernini, and Soares dos Reis are all celebrated. External views vary – some rooms overlook the inner garden with its classical sculptures, other overlook the stout granite of the old estate, or the regimented rows of alvarinho vines.
There are both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a satsanga spa and gym, the main Restaurante Versatil, and a Massa Fina pizzeria. The Paco do Curutelo winery is open daily, and tours guide you through the production process from grape to glass. Further afield, Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest town, is a twenty-minute drive to the north, and Barcelos, the home of the colourful O Galo rooster, is roughly the same distance to the south. Bustling Braga and Portugal’s medieval capital Guimaraes are also close by.
