Tivoli Lagos Algarve Resort
Located on the southwest coast the Algarve, the city of Lagos was once the centre of Portuguese maritime exploration. The Ribeira de Bensafrim estuary divides the city into two, with modern Lagos to the east and its old town to the west.
The Tivoli Lagos sits on the northern edge of this historic quarter, with its medieval maze of narrow streets and tree-lined squares. The hotel sounds large on paper – 296 rooms – thanks to an inventive design, it has the welcoming feel of an unassuming and friendly village, with the guest rooms divided across nine separate buildings. Inside, the decor is elegant and contemporary, with a soft palate of colours reflecting Lagos’ ancient association with the ocean – the work of renown Portuguese interior designer Maria Jose Salavisa.
Walkways of white and blue run throughout the hotel – connecting the restaurant and Amora bar with the peaceful courtyard garden, and indoor and outdoor pools with the guest rooms. Standard rooms are the most secluded, with balconies overlooking central Lagos. Superior and Superior XL rooms are larger, with balconies overlooking either Lagos, the garden, or the outdoor pool. For families, there are Deluxe and Pool View Deluxe rooms, and the most spacious rooms of all are the Suites.
It’s a short walk from the hotel, via the Ponte Elevatoria bridge to the main marina – your departure point for dolphin watching or sea kayaking – and the beaches of Praia da Batata and Praia dos Estudantes are a ten-minute walk down river. Head into the heart of the old town and you’ll find many of Lagos’ most-popular restaurants, coffee shops and café bars.
