Praia do Canal Nature Retreat
Sitting at the centre of the Herdade Vale dos Polvos estate, the Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is at the vanguard of the ‘Real Algarve’ movement. This 220-hectare nature reserve has long resisted the encroachment of mass tourism, and the last three years have seen the region’s pendulum swing away from the crowded resorts of the south coast, toward a more peaceful pause from the frenetic pace of modern life.
This is a hotel which often doesn’t feel like a hotel – it has the aura of laid back, hidden community. It’s almost brutalist architecture somehow sits lightly against the surrounding pine and aloe woodlands: earthy tones and minimalist lines which gently harmonise with the protected landscape of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.
Indoors, the contemporary architecture is softened by natural, soft furnishings which give the guest rooms a comfortable, homely feel. Rooms are groups one-up/one-down, with balcony rooms on the first floor, and garden terrace rooms on the ground. In both cases, west facing patio doors blur the divide between inside and out.
Whichever room you opt for, you’re never far from the outdoor infinity pool, the wellness centre and the Esteva Spa, and the poolside Zimbro Bar is on-hand for drinks and light bites. For your evenings, a half-board stay is recommended and the Restaurante Azeitona has a menu of refined takes on both Algarve and Alentejo regional classics.
Despite its remoteness, the retreat remains surprisingly accessible – the charming town of Aljezur is close by for a fix of local culture and history, and the quiet beaches at Arrifana, Monte Clerigo and Amoreira are a short drive away. If you’d prefer a holiday from driving, our drivers and guides will be happy to show you the best of the west.
