Hotel da Oliveira
Considered by many to be the birthplace of Portugal, Guimaraes’ UNESCO-protected centre is a delightful maze of narrow medieval passageways and charming cobbled squares. The Largo da Oliveira is one of the city’s oldest and prettiest squares – its architecture is dominated by tough granite and exaggerated eaves; most homes are three stories high with pretty wrought-iron balconies, often decorated with the day’s laundry.
The Hotel da Oliveira sits comfortably in the square’s northeastern corner. Five burly and substantial stone columns create a shaded terrace, which leads into the hotel’s popular Restaurante Hool – their a la carte menu is a chance to sample the best of the Minho region’s hearty cuisine. Reception is to the right, with its library-themed décor, low ceilings, soft colours and exposed beams creating a warm and cosy atmosphere. The feel continues throughout the twenty ensuite guest rooms, maybe with more of a lean towards the modern and boutique, with aircon and Wi-fi throughout.
The hotel’s central location is perfect for exploring Guimaraes on foot: the 14th century Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira is next door, with the famous Museu de Alberto Sampaio just beyond. A five-minute walk up Monte Latito hill brings you to the Paco dos Duques de Braganca – the restored palace of Portugal’s second royal dynasty – and the fairytale Castelo de Guimaraes.
