Hotel Albergaria do Calvario
The building itself was constructed in the 16th century as an olive oil mill, and the broad archways and roughly-pointed stone in the shared guest lounges evoke a feel for the Albergaria do Calvario’s industrial past. Its proximity to Evora’s medieval ramparts is no accident – the roman road from Santarem entered the city via the nearby Porta Velha da Lagoa, and the original mill would have been the first port of call for any olive farmer delivering his harvest.
It’s often what’s left out that has the greatest impact, and there’s an understated elegance to the uncluttered décor in the twenty-two bedrooms and suites. Classic Rooms are cosy and comfortable, Prestige Rooms are larger and more suited to guests who like time to relax in their own private space, and the Suites are the most spacious of all. Outside, the sun terrace is the perfect spot for a chilled vinho branco from the nearby Adega da Cartuxa, before heading out into Evora to sample the best Alentejo cuisine.
