Leopard safaris at Okonjima Nature Reserve

Those who are looking to spot a leopard should head to the Okonjima Nature reserve. There are a really good variety of wildlife experiences here, so we recommend spending a couple of days here if you have the time. In a vast country like Namibia, it can be hard to spot a leopard. Though they can be found in Namibia’s National Parks, such as Etosha and and Bwabwata, the leopard is an elusive animal, so your chances of seeing one can be slim. At Okonjima, you get the opportunity to see these wonderful big cats up close, particularly because many of the Leopards here are fitted with radio collars and can be located by the guides. These colours are used to research their behaviours so as to understand and protect them well into the future.

Guided leopard Tracking

Guided leopard tracking at Okonjima tends to be in the afternoons. Okonjima is one of Namibia’s most successful cat conservation projects and your visit contributes towards long-term carnivore conservation projects across Namibia. Though you will see other wildlife along the way, you guide will primarily focus on taking you to where the leopards have been spotted during the day. Make sure to bring a camera and binoculars!

Game drives at Okonjima in Namibia

Game drives at Okonjima Nature Reserve

As well as leopard tracking, you can also enjoy game drives within the Okonjima Nature Reserve. There are brown hyena, aardvark, pangolin, giraffes, zebra and rhino, to name just a few. Your guide will know how to spot these animals and will stop regularly so that you can watch them from the vehicle. There are night game drives too, so you have the opportunity to see the animals that don’t commonly come out during the day, such as bat-eared foxes, aardwolf, and owls.

Namibia walking Safari

Nature Trails, and Pangolin and Rhino tracking on foot

There are lots of other wildlife experiences for you to choose from during your stay and the luxury lodges are all part of the experience. You can head out on a nature walk with an experienced guide or track pangolin and rhino on foot.

How can I book a Leopard Safari in Namibia?

If you are booking your holiday to Namibia with Archipelago Choice, we can include a visit to Okonjima within your holiday package. Okonjima works well with most holiday itineraries because it’s only a couple of hours north of Windhoek, and you pass by if you are heading to Etosha from Windhoek. And remember, you can always give us a call if you have any questions you would like to ask about the activities on offer in Namibia

Best time to go

The best time to go to Namibia is during their winter, from May to September. During these months the skies are clear, temperatures will be in the low to mid-twenties, and there is very little rainfall. If you like warm temperatures, September is the hottest month of this period. Game viewing is at its optimum because animals will be gathering round the watering holes. Similarly, looking for the wild cats is easier when the foliage is less dense, and temperatures are perfect for those guided desert walks.
