Eira do Serrado Hotel
The Eira do Serrado Hotel sits on the summit of Pico do Serrado and towers over the village of Curral das Freiras. The hotel overlooks the nuns valley, one of Madeira’s most photographed views. Guests staying at the hotel can enjoy this view from each of the hotel’s twenty-six spacious balcony rooms. You also get this same beautiful vista from the glass-covered heated swimming pool, the fitness room, and the restaurant terrace.
The hotel’s location makes it ideal for exploring the islands high central mountains. A new road takes you from Serrado to Madeira’s second highest peak, Pico Arieiro. It’s the famous ridge walk with a steep section referred to as the ‘stairway’ to heaven and is a must for any keen walker.
The Nun’s Valley, the Curral das Freiras, famously provided safe refuge to the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara. They were forced to flee Funchal when French pirates attacked in the mid-16th century. The village itself is amazingly remote, surrounded on all sides by some of the island’s highest mountain peaks: Pico de Cedro (1759m), Pico da Ginda (1316m), and Pico do Serradinho in the west (1436m). You can’t beat this location for spectacular mountain views.
