It has beaches, frogs, birds, other wild animals, volcanoes and rain and cloud forests. A whole list they can boast about (and parents too by the way) when they’re home again. Ok, so the long flight can be a bit of a bore, but hey, they can watch the latest films, listen to music or they can just bring their own games. Believe me, it’s all worth it.
All the hotels we have selected on our Costa Rica Family Self-Drive Holiday are kid friendly with pools, restaurants and offer lots of exciting activities. How about going on a nature walk with a naturalist who will point all those hidden places where animals will be hiding and which you otherwise would miss. The animals you’ll encounter will be nothing like those in the Jurassic Park films, but I bet encounters with the brown eyelash pit viper (from a safe distance) or the big owl butterfly, as big as your hand that will sit on your head, or those adorable sloths hanging from a tree will leave you equally impressed.
You’ll feel like Spiderman when you cross those hanging bridges high above the tree canopy and for the more adventurous, zipping from tree to tree above the tree tops will make you feel like Superman or Tarzan. The beaches too are cool. During the day why not have a go at wind or body boarding and in the evening, you can go to the beach accompanied by a guide in search of turtles and witness them laying their eggs.
Costa Rican food is not weird or spicy either, but simple and really a bit like home – chicken, steak, fish with some vegetables, potatoes or fries and rice. In one hotel you can learn to make your own tortillas – not the Mexican one that we all know, but the Costa Rican version and you get to eat them too at the end, with cheese and soured cream. In the hotels you can drink the water straight from the tap and if you’re bored of this, why not try the local drinks, like batidos (fresh fruit shakes) or use a bamboo straw to sip coconut milk from a freshly cracked open coconut.
