It’s likely that your Costa Rican journey will start and finish in San Jose. If you’re staying one night to move on to Tortuguero the next day, we’ll arrange accommodation a short transfer from the airport and not inside the city. If you’re staying say two nights, or you’re staying on the way home to catch a late flight departure, or of course if you’d like to stay in the city to experience the culture and hustle and bustle, there are plenty of great hotels we can choose from for you.
Bustling cultural centre of Costa Rica, San Jose is Costa Rica’s vibrant capital city. With few buildings over 100 years old, the mountainous capital is relatively modern compared to its Latin American counterparts but Costa Rican and ex-pat cultures mingle to create a mosaic of experiences. Highlights include the architecture of the National Theatre, shopping at the Mercado Central, learning about local jade at the Jade Museum, and seeing pre-Colombian artefacts at the Museo del Oro Precolombino. In the evening eat and drink in a great selection of restaurants and bars or perhaps take in a show!
Climate: Eternal Spring! San Jose’s altitude and position means that locals enjoy a mild and pleasant climate year-round. Temperatures are 18-30 year-round and December to April is the drier season – January-March are almost-dry – and May to November the wetter season.
