Birdwatching in Cape Verde
The islands of Cape Verde have an interesting range of endemic species offering some rare birdwatching opportunities. There are many seabirds, such as Petrels, Frigate Birds, and Shearwaters. Inland you might see Buzzards, the Cape Verde Warbler, Falcons, Ospreys, and of course Cape Verde’s famous Kingfishers. Whether you go independently or with a guide, it’s best to head to the most vegetated islands for the best bird watching experiences. Sao Nicolao, Santo Antao, and Santiago are particularly good, due to their lush green valleys. However, there are bird watching opportunities throughout all of the islands.
At Archipelago Choice, we offer a full-day guided bird watching excursion on Santiago:
Guided bird-watching on Santiago

You’ll join your English-speaking local guide for a full day of birdwatching. On Santiago species of birdlife you might see include purple herons, warblers, lago sparrows (also known as Cape Verde sparrows), Cape Verde cream-coloured coursers, kingfishers, common buzzards and Cape Verde barn owl. The day is completely flexible and your guide will come and meet you at your hotel in the morning and discuss options before setting off. Areas and locations usually visited include Achada Tras which is a subdivision of Praia; Sao Jorge which is in the central part of the island; dams at Poilão, Flamengos and Figueira Gorda and Lagoa Santa. There is usually a little walking involved but, again, this is a very flexible day so if the guide knows in advance that you don’t want to be walking huge distances the itinerary can be adjusted accordingly.
