Casa Marisa II
Casa Marisa II on the island of Fogo has quite a story to tell. It literally rose from the ashes after the volcanic eruption of Pico de Fogo in November 2014.
The casa was re-built and opened again as version ‘II’ less than a year later on top of the still-warm lava. Even today, in places the floors are still warm enough to be too hot without footwear!
The main building of the Casa has simple but spacious brightly painted rooms with simple en-suite facilities built around an open courtyard. Surrounding the main building are separate bungalow-rooms built like traditional circular African huts – the Funku rooms. Each Funku has a roof terrace under their conical shaped wooden slatted roof.
The huge dining room serves great food (a mixture of French and Cape Verdean dishes) made with local produce by owner Marisa and her sisters. Try the locally produced wine as well. Husband Mustafa is a keen climber and has developed the first Via Ferrata on the Bordeira. There is Wi-Fi in the dining room.
With the Caldeira floor being at an altitude of some 1,700 metres, the Caldeira is a place with its own unique atmosphere and the most amazing starry nights.
