Casa Lavra is a simple, welcoming guesthouse in the heart of Chã das Caldeiras, at the foot of Fogo Volcano. What it lacks in luxury, it more than makes up for in location. Step outside and you’ll be greeted by extraordinary views of the volcano, which towers above the village and serves as a constant reminder of the dramatic landscape that surrounds you.
Following the 2014 eruption, Portela has slowly and remarkably rebuilt itself, and Casa Lavra is part of this new chapter. Brightly painted buildings, colourful flowers and small courtyard gardens bring warmth and character to a landscape shaped by lava and volcanic rock.
Accommodation is straightforward, clean and comfortable, providing everything you need for a stay in this unique corner of Cape Verde. The guesthouse is spread across several buildings, with traditional design elements that reflect the local style and the ongoing regeneration of the village. You’ll also notice some of the distinctive round houses that are now becoming part of the local landscape.
Life in Chã das Caldeiras remains closely connected to the volcano and to the community that rebuilt here. You may see local builders at work, using techniques that have been passed down through generations, including volcanic materials gathered from the surrounding terrain. The pace is relaxed, and any ongoing work is unlikely to disturb your stay.
All rooms are en-suite, and solar-heated water is available. However, Casa Lavra is not about luxury facilities—it’s about the experience of spending time on the crater floor, surrounded by one of the most remarkable landscapes in the Atlantic islands. Whether you’re watching the changing light on the volcano, exploring the lava fields or simply enjoying the tranquillity of the setting, this is a place that leaves a lasting impression.
The on-site restaurant serves hearty, home-cooked meals, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring. Stays are available on either a bed-and-breakfast or half-board basis.
