Casa Baobab
Tarrafal de Monte Trigo is a relaxed fishing village on Santo Antão’s remote west coast, where life moves at a slower pace. Casa Baobab sits just steps from the stone-pebbled beach, making it a great base for anyone looking to experience a quieter side of the island.
To get there, you follow a road that winds through remote mountain villages and an arid landscape before descending towards the coast. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of Topo da Coroa, Santo Antão’s highest peak, which rises to 1,979 metres above sea level.
Casa Baobab is a simple, welcoming guesthouse nestled between the mountains and the sea. It’s a place to slow down, watch local life unfold and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Fishing boats come and go throughout the day, and there are a handful of local restaurants where you can sample fresh seafood and Cape Verdean cuisine.
The rooms are simple but clean and comfortably furnished, each with a private balcony, kitchenette and bathroom. Some rooms overlook the sea, while others have mountain views. Breakfast is included, and the kitchenette is handy for preparing light meals or drinks to enjoy on your balcony. The friendly staff are always happy to help with local recommendations or arranging activities.
The owner, David, is originally from France but has made Santo Antão his home for many years. He runs the local dive school and can arrange diving excursions for guests interested in exploring the waters off the coast. If you plan to go swimming, ask David about the conditions because there is sometimes an undertow
There are also some rewarding walks nearby. A trail follows the Ribeira do Tarrafal valley inland, passing waterfalls and small farming communities, while another route leads to the isolated fishing village of Monte Trigo along the coast.
