Sea Kayaking in Baja California

As soon as you catch your first glimpse of the seas surrounding Baja California you will want to get in! And there are loads of ways to do this, from marine excursions to kayaking and snorkelling. December through to April are the ideal months to enjoy sea kayaking in terms of favourable weather and a chance to spot whales as you paddle. The most popular sites tend to be on the eastern side of the peninsular, in the Sea of Cortez. We highlight some majestic locations that are teaming with wildlife, and some quiet rivers through palm dates and mangrove channels, to give variety and flavour.

Isla Coronado, Loreto Bay

Baja California - Kayaking

This island is located close to the northern limits of the Loreto Bay National Park. It’s the upper part of a volcano reaching out of the sea. Among its inhabitants are Ospreys and many other sea bird species, sea lions, and several kinds of dolphins. And, as if this were not enough, five species of whales are occasional visitors to these waters. Another highlight of the island is a gorgeous protected bay and beach, which is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Depending on the weather conditions, you may even get to swim with sea lions.

Paddle from Balandra Beach to Pichilingue

Balandra Bay, La Paz

Balandra beach is considered to be the nicest beach in the Bay of La Paz and that’s saying something, because there are so many beautiful beaches, big and small. From here you will paddle south to Pichilingue, staying close to shore and exploring hidden coves and beaches. Expect to see sea lions and blue footed boobies. And you will have plenty of time to stop and get into the water for a snorkel, to see those tropical fish.

Multi-day kayaking trip to Isla Espiritu Santo, near La Paz

Baja California - Isla Espíritu Santo 2@Klaus Wünnemann -

This beautiful island is probably the most popular spot for those looking to enjoy a sea kayaking experience. It’s a UNESCO protected site with white sand beaches, shallow turquoise waters and opportunities to kayak amongst sea lions. If you’re here between October and April, you may spot the whale sharks that feed on plankton around the island, and across the whole bay of La Paz. Because of the distance, you either need to get a motor boat out to the island, or go on a multi-day kayaking trip, which includes camping for a few days on the island.

Kayak through mangrove channels in Magdalena Bay

Kayaking in Baja California

This is a good choice for wildlife lovers, because you’ll see lots of animals in the water, in the mangroves, and on the sandbars of Magdalena Bay. You’re likely to see sea lions, sea turtles, pods of dolphin, and lots of sea birds, such as frigates and pelican. This is different to the majestic turquoise waters and white beaches around the Sea of Cortez. This is a more thoughtful experience, paddling slowly and quietly so as not to disturb the wildlife around you.

Kayaking through the San Ignacio Oasis

San Ignacio Oasis in Baja California

San Ignacio is a sleepy little town with a pretty church made out of volcanic stone. It’s surrounded by a large oasis of date palms and a river skirts around the edge of the town. Some of the resorts rent kayaks and offer guided kayaking trips along the river. This is flat water paddling, taking your time to appreciate the peace and tranquility of your surroundings.

Cabo San Lucas Arch, at Baja’s southern tip

Cabo San Lucas Arch in Baja California

Cabo San Lucas is at the very southern point of the Baja California Peninsula and it’s an idyllic location. It’s dramatic, it’s stunning and one of the pretties places on the peninsula. The waters are incredibly clear and you can head out with a guide, in glass bottomed sit-on-top kayaks. The little bays in this area are very picturesque, with lots of interesting rock formations. You can paddle through the arch and stop off for a swim or snorkel.

Best time to go

The weather is great all year round and it can get particularly hot in the summer months with occasional tropical rains and storms in August and September. Winds are generally stronger and bring cooler air during the winter months – perhaps the best time to visit Baja California. Spring brings warmer temperatures with the least amount of rain. January to March is the best season to see migrating whales give birth in the lagoons.
