Downhill all the way: Mountain Biking in the Azores & Madeira

Europe is the go-to destination for UK mountain bikers seeking dusty trails. Here’s why it’s time for the islands of Madeira and Sao Miguel to join the party…

Madeira has recently transformed itself into one of Europe’s most popular mountain biking destinations. If you’re a biker you’ll no-doubt be aware of this – you’ve probably seen Josh Bryceland & Cut Media’s 2015 Madeira Dreamin’ film but you should also also check out the gorgeous Lonely Island film from the 2017 EWS Film Festival.

The island’s seemingly endless variety of trails is the key: dusty singletrack routes that flow through Laurisilva forests, vertigo-inducing levada trails that hug steep-sided river valleys, and full-on downhill tracks and gap jumps for all you air cadets.

Not to be outdone by their Madeiran cousins, the Azoreans have also embraced mountain biking in a big way. There’s a vast network of enduro trails criss-crossing the islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria. It’s a very different landscape – the riding’s mostly in and around the (still officially ‘active’) calderas and volcanic hotspots that originally formed the islands. There are probably some amazing views to admire along the way, but that would mean stopping which would spoil the fun!
