Island hopping from Sao Miguel to Madeira

Being island specialists, we’ll often recommend combining visits to a few different islands during your holiday – Terceira and Graciosa in the Azores for example, or Sao Vicente and Santo Antao in Cape Verde.

Flying between islands is always a highlight for me when I visit the Azores; rather than eating into your valuable holiday time, these inter-island flights add something quite special to your trip.

It seemed a shame that we weren’t offering the same island hopping adventures with our Madeira holidays, so we set about correcting that. The first, most obvious choice is to combine your stay on Madeira with a few nights on her little neighbour Porto Santo. Porto Santo’s great if you just want to relax on the beach, eat great food and drink a glass or two of Portuguese wine.

The not-so-obvious option is to combine a week on Madeira with a week on the Azores island of Sao Miguel. Sao Miguel has some lovely, peaceful spots particularly up on the shores of Lagoa do Fogo high in the Agua de Pau mountains:

Or you could spend Saturday afternoon kayaking on Lagoa Azul at Sete Cidades…

…and Sunday afternoon exploring the breath-taking Curral das Freiras on Madeira:

Combining the two islands is surprisingly easy. A direct, four-hour flight from Gatwick on a Saturday would bring you to Sao Miguel for your first week. It’s just a two-hour flight from Sao Miguel to Funchal for your second week, and you can fly home direct to Gatwick at the end of your stay.

Our Azores and Madeira family holiday will give you a feel for what’s possible, but we can tailor-make whatever combination suits you best.
