How to stay cool when it’s a hot, hot, hot heatwave

how to keep cool in a heatwaveWith the hot winds from North Africa triggering an unseasonal heatwave and government warnings across many parts of Europe, as well as throwing a bucket of water over yourself, here are some of our tips on how to stay cool and sun safe wherever you are:

Drink plenty of water

Sounds obvious we know, but drink water! The NHS Eatwell Guide recommends between 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day, but when it’s hot, you’ll need a lot more.

We suggest always carrying a bottle of water around with you on holiday, and ideally, to reduce our plastic waste, use your own reusable bottle and refill it rather than keep buying new bottles of water.

(You can take advantage of our 15% off Water-to-Go’s reusable 75cl or 50cl bottles, and selected water filters by using the code: ARCH15 when you buy online at www.watertogo.eu)

Stay safe in the sun

While being in the sunshine always gives us a boost, we do have to be careful and protect ourselves. A country renowned for its very high temperatures, Australia, developed a great sun-safe campaign with Sid the Seagull delivering his message Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide:

  • Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible.
  • Slop on SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours when outdoors or more often if perspiring or swimming.
  • Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears.
  • Seek shade.
  • Slide on sunglasses.

Avoid too much alcohol

Many of us enjoy a little tipple or sundowner on holiday, but go easy in the hot weather. Alcohol does dehydrate you, so make sure you drink plenty of water as well as that refreshing afternoon beer.

Enjoy a siesta

OK, it might not always be practical to take a full on siesta, but do try to avoid over exerting yourself and strenuous exercise in the heat; lying in the shade and relaxing for a while might actually be the tonic you need.
