Madeira Botanical Gardens

If you’re interested in stunning gardens, why not couple this stay with a visit to Maderia’s show-stopping Botanical Gardens.  Known as Quinta do Bom Successo, the Botanical Gardens are located about 3km from Quinta Jardins do Lago.  The gardens cover 19 acres, 12 of which are landscaped and host glorious views of the mountains in the north and the shimmering ocean water to the south.

The gardens can be accessed by road or cable car.  Take the cable car from Largo das Babosasin Monte, over the Ribeira valley of João Gomes, all the way up to Madeira’s Botanical Garden.  Here you will find a beautiful collection of harmonious shapes and contrasting colours with over 2500 exotic plants, flowers and trees.

The garden is divided into five sections exhibiting local as well as foreign plants. Part of the park is devoted to some over 300 different species of magnificent exotic birds.

It was created in 1960 as part of the manor house and belonged to the Reid’s family. One of its main purposes was the conservation of indigenous Madeiran plants, some of which are very rare and extinct in the wild.  It’s a perfect location where the climatic conditions are much in favour of exuberant vegetation. Now, it’s government owned and apart from being a beautiful place of leisure, it also serves as a Science and Culture Centre.

Full of wildlife, the Island also has other spectacular gardens to visit too, such as the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and Quinta Palmeira. Visit our site today to see the holidays in Madeira we have to offer, or contact us directly.

Madeira is a holiday paradise, if you’ve visited some of the idyllic garden location’s on the island why not share it on our Facebook or mention us on Twitter @archchoice.
