Our friends at SOS Tartarugas on Sal announced the birth of 42 Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) on 16th October.
This is really exciting as it’s the first time a sea turtle birth, apart from the Loggerhead, has been witnessed on the island of Sal.
The baby Green Turtles are larger than the Loggerhead turtles, with white edges on the flippers and with a white belly. The hatchlings were born at night weighing around 15g and it’s a significant scientific event showing once again how important Cape Verde is as a nesting area for turtles.
