If one week just isn’t long enough and you want to explore more than one island, then this two-week Azores family holiday could be just the tonic.
You’ll be staying at two of our old favourites, Quinta Altamira on the island of Sao Miguel and Casas d’ Arramada on the island of Faial. These are two very different islands, but each has much to offer the explorer in all of us. Sao Miguel is the largest island in the archipelago and boasts 3 volcanoes, several beaches and probably the most things to see and do. However, just one hour by inter-island flight lies the island of Faial. This island is situated in what is locally known as the central group and is close to the island of Pico, with its highest mountain and Sao Jorge with its dramatic coastal walks. Faial was once the centre for trans-Atlantic communication; first boats, then underwater telecommunications and then sea planes. These days Faial is frequented by the brave few who sail the Atlantic and the vibrant marina depicts these daring deeds through the murals left on the harbour wall by trans-Atlantic sailors.
Like all our holidays we like to give a focus on seeing and doing as much as possible and we include a car on both islands, a whale watching trip and an opportunity to swim with dolphins. We also island a set of walk maps and notes, so you can explore some of the many trails on the islands.
